How it all began ...
Some passions never leave you. For Kerry Schwartz, surfing has been a constant companion since his youth in the Rio Grande Valley, where he opened his first surf shop as a teenager back in the 1960s. That early venture sparked two lifelong loves: riding waves and helping others discover the joy of surf culture.
Life took Kerry down different paths first – a successful career in Houston's corporate world, where he built and sold several businesses. But the call of the ocean never faded. After years in the fast-paced business world, Kerry knew it was time to return to his roots and create something special.
In 2003, when others might have chosen a quiet retirement, Kerry embarked on a new adventure. He scouted locations from Malibu to the East Coast, searching for the perfect spot to open his dream surf shop. While the iconic breaks of Malibu beckoned, Kerry's heart pulled him back to the familiar shores of South Padre Island. Something about the laid-back atmosphere and welcoming community felt like home.
Island Native was born from a vision of creating more than just a retail space – it's a celebration of the surfing lifestyle. Our colorful shop on Padre Boulevard has evolved into a complete surf culture destination. Whether you're looking for your first board, taking surf lessons, seeking the perfect beach wear, or gearing up with skateboards and bikes, we're here to share our passion for ocean life with every person who walks through our doors.
Beyond the shop, you'll find us deeply involved in the South Padre Island community, advocating for projects like the Island's skate park and supporting local initiatives. It's all part of our commitment to making South Padre Island an even better place to live, surf, and play.
